This collector by name John Sulivan truly judged the great potential concealed in this region, which was beautifully surrounded by four hills of the Nilgiri range. Sulivan developed this nature’s bounty into an awesome summer resort. Prior to the development of this place into a resort, it was popularly called “Udhagamandalam” by the locals. A brief history of Ooty

In the prehistoric times Vishnu Vardhana the king of Hoysalas ruled over Nilgiris from 1104 to 1141 AD. During this period the region was popular as Nila and afterwards Nilgiris, due to the blue mist which normally covers these hill ranges. The original inhabitants of the Nilgiris were the tribal’s called Todas, Badaga and Paniva. Among these tribal’s Todas were the most astounding people of this region engaged in cattle grazing, traditional jewellery making and producing colorful embroidered shawls. Todas were highest ranking among other local tribes like kuruba, kota and Badaga. Regarding population also they dominated other tribes and have preserved their explicit culture till date. They used to live in small traditional barrel shaped houses, which used to sprawl along the beautiful slopes of the hills. Tourists visiting this destination can view the Toda huts representing the original dwellings of the ancient tribal’s. About Ooty it is said that before the start of tourist boom it was only a sleepy summer hill retreat engaged in cattle grazing and farming. Gradually this destination captured reputation of a well known tourist destination in the state earning huge revenue through tourism. One of the major Ooty attractions is the incredible handmade articles made by the todas, which represent an age old culture of the Nilgiris.
