How To Reach Ooty

Ooty is the most glamorous hill station among the three jewels of Tamil Nadu tourism namely Kotagiri, Ooty and Coonoor. These places tucked at great heights on the Nilgiri Mountains are must visit places, while going on a tour of South India. Nilgiri hills are located in the westernmost part of Tamil Nadu state at the junction of Kerala and Karnataka states. Ooty is pride of Nilgiris located at a height of more than two thousand m, which is located at around eighty km to the north of Coimbatore.

It can be reached by air from Coimbatore airport, which is the nearest airport to this quaint city located on high altitudes. It can be approached by Nigiris Express from Chennai. Mettupalayam is the nearest railway station located at forty seven km from Ooty, which has regular train service from Chennai and Coimbatore. The most interesting part of the journey can be experienced by riding the mountain train, which runs between Ooty and Mettupalayam. This narrow gauge toy train is most popular among the visitors to Ooty. About Ooty

Ooty is the ultimate hill resort in Tamil Nadu, which was discovered by a British collector during survey of the region. This collector by name John Sulivan truly judged the great potential concealed in this region, which was beautifully surrounded by four hills of the Nilgiri range. Sulivan developed this nature’s bounty into an awesome summer resort. Prior to the development of this place into a resort, it was popularly called “Udhagamandalam” by the locals. After the Britishers converted this place into a tourist heaven for the sake of convenience and easy pronunciation they renamed it as Ooty.

A brief history of Ooty

In the prehistoric times Vishnu Vardhana the king of Hoysalas ruled over Nilgiris from 1104 to 1141 AD. During this period the region was popular as Nila and afterwards Nilgiris, due to the blue mist which normally covers these hill ranges. The original inhabitants of the Nilgiris were the tribal’s called Todas, Badaga and Paniva. Among these tribal’s Todas were the most astounding people of this region engaged in cattle grazing, traditional jewellery making and producing colorful embroidered shawls. Todas were highest ranking among other local tribes like kuruba, kota and Badaga. Regarding population also they dominated other tribes and have preserved their explicit culture till date. They used to live in small traditional barrel shaped houses, which used to sprawl along the beautiful slopes of the hills. Tourists visiting this destination can view the Toda huts representing the original dwellings of the ancient tribal’s. About Ooty it is said that before the start of tourist boom it was only a sleepy summer hill retreat engaged in cattle grazing and farming. Gradually this destination captured reputation of a well known tourist destination in the state earning huge revenue through tourism. One of the major Ooty attractions is the incredible handmade articles made by the todas, which represent an age old culture of the Nilgiris.

Ooty Pykara Lake and Falls

The grand attractions of Ooty are the well landscaped lakes, waterfalls jumping from the hillocks, ancient temples and monuments. This lake city enveloped in the Nilgiris has many beautiful lakes like Porthimund Lake, Emerald Lake, Upper Bhavani, Avalanche and Pykara Lake.
